Easter is just around the corner. Since we are discussing the topic of joy, I thought it would be nice to take today and focus on the joy we can have because of the fact of a risen Lord Jesus. Perhaps this is something you can meditate on in the coming week as we prepare to celebrate His resurrection.
What is it that gives us a future hope? Why do we sing in the night, and smile in the storm? Why can we have joy even in the midst of the sorrow of death?
In the days leading up the crucifixion of Christ, the Lord Jesus was preparing his disciples for what was coming. However, he did not only tell them of his death; but he also prepared them for the reality of his resurrection.
John 16:19-22 Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?
Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.
The truth of the resurrection should give the believer joy! All that Christ accomplished for us in his death and resurrection is ours still today!
The New Testament contains several verses which make it clear that the risen Lord is reason to have joy.
Romans 5:11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.
1Peter 1:8 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:
1Peter 4:13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.
After the crucifixion of Christ, the disciples were scattered. They were fearful and full of sorrow that Jesus was dead.
Soon enough, in three days, their sorrow was turned to joy, just as Jesus had promised!
This week, as we consider the resurrection in preparation for Easter Sunday, let us remember that this truth alone should give us joy in the Holy Spirit.
A resurrected Lord conquered death for us!
A resurrected Lord is powerful to save!
A resurrected Lord promises a home with Him for all eternity to those who come to Him by faith!
A resurrected Lord daily lives to make intercession for us!
A resurrected Lord will never leave us nor forsake us.
These things, and so many more, give us joy today.
No matter what the future holds, knowing Who hold the future gives us joy.
No matter how difficult today may be, because He lives, I can face tomorrow; and face it with joy.
There is a song in my heart today because of a resurrected Lord. That is joy that cannot pass away!
Heavenly Father, I praise you today for the truth of the resurrection. Because Christ lives, I live. Because He conquered death, it holds not terror for me. Because Christ rose from the dead, my loved ones, who have died in Him, are kept safe, and I know I will see them again. There is so much joy available to me through this wonderful truth. Help me to focus on it, when I am tempted to focus on my troubles. I Jesus name, amen.
